The 2006 title, Sonic the Hedgehog, had Sonic navigating the beautiful yet perilous city of Soleanna, where he sought to save Princess Elise from Dr. Eggman, grappling with the newcomer Silver the Hedgehog along the way.

In Sonic Unleashed (2008), players experienced Sonic's transformation into "Sonic the Werehog," a result of his merging with Dark Gaia's power. This gave him a new personality, enhanced strength, and flexibility at the cost of his traditional speed. In Sonic Colors (2010), Eggman's ambitions take a twist as he aims to exploit the energy of alien creatures called "Wisps." The 2011 game Sonic Generations features two different versions of Sonic – the classic and modern incarnations – allowing players to experience gameplay reminiscent of earlier titles while revisiting stages from Sonic's storied history to rescue his friends.

April 2013 saw the announcement of Sonic Lost World, set to debut in October of the same year for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Other titles like Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007) and Sonic and the Black Knight (2009) explored storybook themes, ranging from One Thousand and One Nights to the Arthurian legends.
